IN THE MOOD FOR MUD was a performance based on the idea of “stringfigures”, a concept by Donna Haraway built on the cat’s cradle game, an age-old game to create ever more complex string figures with a looped string. The performance consisted of a series of “action-dances” aimed to strip contemporary dance from its focus on spectacle and experimental music from its neglect of the bodily and spatial dimensions of performance through a rigorous formal setup, a boxing ring. Two performers (Hoelzl and Kovacs) engaged in short “transactions” on a boxing stage, including a blind-folded wrestling match, a musical “chase” and a final deconstructed ballet.
